In its 68 page Government Accountability report to Congress, many pages disparage the USDA and its ineffective regulations...in lieu of MORE legislation and MORE money the GAO recommended that Congress STOP THE SLAUGHTER.... Congress are you listening ??
Each year 150,000 U.S.A. horses are exported to foreign countries for purposes of slaughter and entry into global food chain. Since the FDA regulates horses to be companion animals they are not raised as food animals - consequently are full of drugs which are banned for use in food animals. This legislative loophole presents risk to the entire food chain. Perhaps the most ubiquitous carcinogenic present is phenybutazone (bute) - but majority of slaughter horses are young athletes who have been pumped full of FDA banned substances. In August 2015 horsemeat DNA was found in samples of ground meat (Chapman University). 94% of Americans have continuously opposed the slaughter of horses and yet this disastrous situation continues - US Congress has a chance to change this shameful situation with a zero cost bill : HR1942 /S1214 . Let's ask our representatives to represent the will and wishes of the American people .
HR1942 & S1214 both pending in subcommittees of the House and the Senate state : "Congress finds that...equines raised in the United States are frequently treated with drugs, including phenylbutazone, acepromazine, boldenone undecylenate, omeprazole, ketoprofen, xylazine, hyaluronic acid, nitrofurazone, polysulfated glycosaminoglycan, clenbuterol, tolazoline, and ponazuril, which are not approved for use in horses intended for human consumption and equine parts are therefore unsafe within the meaning of section 512 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act; and consuming parts of an equine raised in the United States likely poses a serious threat to human health and the public should be protected from these unsafe products. " American horses do not have health passports as do those raised in countries for the purposes of human consumption. Rather, our horses enter the killpen/slaughter pipeline directly from sporthorse careers (racing, rodeo, etc.) mostly pumped full of these banned chemicals.
This is the second time around that good and ethical legislators have proposed this NO COST common sense bill yet special interests are playing with our health, the world's health, and have hijacked the peoples wishes. 94% of Americans oppose horse slaugher. Undoubtedly nobody (even the legislators) want to eat horsemeat. Yet for the benefit of a very few special interest groups these bills are yet to get onto the floor for a vote.
